We observed four J0-J-1 rotational lines of E-methanol at 157 GHz in the cores of several molecular clouds using the 12-m ARO telescope on Kitt Peak, AZ. All of the four lines were observed within one frequency bandpass, which allowed for "self-calibration” of their parameters. A radial velocity resolution better than 0.1 km/s allowed us to de-convolve the three partly blended lines (J = 1, 2 and 3) better than in previous investigations. By combining the relative observational characteristics of the broad ("quasi-thermal") components of these lines with computer modeling of the statistical equilibrium of level populations, we determined the probable values of the physical parameters in the cloud cores, including the excitation temperatures and optical depths of the methanol lines, the kinetic temperature and number density of hydrogen molecules and the abundance of methanol. Strong variations in the excitation characteristics of methanol molecules from source to source were detected. These variations are discussed in the context of the differences in other physical parameters of the clouds, both determined in this study and available from the literature. This project was supported by the NSF/REU grant AST-0851892 and the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association.
