Fluctuations in plasma and magnetic fields on a time scale of the order of minutes are present in interplanetary space almost constantly and impinge on the bow shock from all directions. A model studying the interaction between MHD waves and the earth's bow shock under ordinary conditions is presented. The results show that the state of fluctuations undergoes a significant jump across the earth's bow shock. Simulations for the spatial variation in the state of fluctuations behind the bow shock reveal a dawn-dusk asymmetry higher in the dawn than in the dusk side. When the background IMF turns southward (or northward), the maximum region for the magnetic field fluctuations moves from lower to higher latitudes in the northern (or southern) hemisphere, so that the south-north (or north-south) asymmetry appears in magnetosheath fluctuation activities. This asymmetry could be one of the causes for some magnetospheric asymmetrical phenomena.
