Heliosphere, Structure

Scientific paper

The heliospheric shock structure acts as a shield protecting the inner heliosphere from the harsh interstellar environment, especially from cosmic rays. Therefore, a variation of the solar wind parameters with the solar cycle as well as a changing interstellar environment can lead to remarkable variations in the heliocentric distance of the termination shock, affecting the configuration of planetary magnetospheres and the chemical abundances of their atmospheres. While the solar cycle variations only have a moderate, almost negligible influence on the heliospheric shield, changes in the interstellar environment, e.g. in density, in temperature or in the relative velocity with respect to the Sun, can have large effects. The most pronounced of these effects, sporadically results from the Keplerian motion of the Sun around the galactic center, and leads possibly to an increased cometary flux from the Oort cloud, possibly causing biological mass extinctions on Earth. A more subtle effect is the increase of the cosmic ray flux with decreasing heliocentric distance of the termination shock, which can influence the climate on Earth and may initiate ice ages.
