An increase in geomagnetic activity is accompanied by negative disturbances of the electron density in the maximum of the ionospheric E layer. A quantitative relationship was obtained for the magnitude of these disturbances in terms of a Ap index by means of a multiple regression procedure. Analysis of elementary processes in the E layer shows that the reduction of the electron density several percent at the time of a magnetic disturbance may be explained as a result of either an increase in NO concentration, or a change in the O or O2 concentration.
