The use of variable stars as indicators of the distances of stellar systems and thus the population to which they belong is discussed. The characteristics of population I stars, which are considered to be the products of recent star formation, are distinguished from those of population II stars, which are believed to be considerably older, and it is pointed out that it may be difficult to decide between the two populations in distant clusters for which spectroscopic analysis of a single component is not possible. The various types of variable stars which may be used as distance indicators to determine cluster positions are then examined, with attention given to the evolutionary stages and population memberships of variable nebulae, Beta Canis Majoris-type variables, Cepheids, RV Tauri variables, semiregular stars and Mira variables, as well as novae and supernovae.
