Variable stars are presented in relation to the activities of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO), an amateur organization for the systematic acquisition of variable star data and the communication of this data to professionals. The importance of optical variable star observations to investigations of stellar properties such as mass, radius, temperature, luminosity, structure, composition, distance and evolution is explained, and the naming of variables according to constellation and position is outlined. The various classifications of variable stars are then examined, with attention given to the pulsating variables, including Cepheids, RR Lyrae stars, RV Tauri stars, and long-period or Mira variables, semiregular variables, irregular variables, eruptive variables including supernovae, novae, recurrent novae, U Geminorum stars, symbiotic stars, flare stars, Z Camelopardalis stars, and R Coronae Borealis stars, and extrinsic variables including eclipsing binaries and rotating variables. The development of a useful observing program for the amateur is discussed, and the treatment of observations acquired by the AAVSO is outlined.
