This paper describes a method for deriving the fundamental characteristics (spectral energy distribution and polarization parameters) of variable sources responsible for nuclear activity by using observations of photometric and polarization variability. The great advantage of the method is that results are obtained without prior knowledge of the contribution of the variable source to the total radiation. Some results of applying the method to blazar investigations are given.
