A 2-micron map covering 4 x 4 arcmin around the galactic center is presented, together with color information in the form of right-ascension scans at 1.6, 2.2, and 3.5 microns. The results demonstrate that extinction across the galactic center is not uniform. Comparison of the map with the distribution of H2CO extinction shows that the 2-micron emission and the H2CO extinction are correlated, with the strongest IR emission in regions of lowest H2CO extinction; this indicates that molecular clouds cause a large part of the variable extinction and that these molecular clouds lie in front of the galactic center. The three-color scans reveal that regions with high H2CO extinction and low 2-micron emission are reddest, which is further evidence that increased extinction is responsible for the lower 2-micron fluxes.
