To accommodate the numerous resolutions employed in multiaperture spectrographs, a variable dispersion system is proposed. To avoid the limitations inherent in high-resolution systems, a process is described for the case of the ESSEFEM multislit spectrograph in which two Carpenter gratings are used, with the two gratings being turned symmetrically with respect to the dispersion. The gratings are placed one above the other, and the resulting dispersion is obtained in the bisecting plane of the dihedral angle formed by the two gratings.
