We have been monitoring the M87 jet with sub-arcsec resolution since 2002 in radio, optical, and X-rays. We compare the resulting lightcurves of the various regions of the jet with the variable TeV emission detected by a number of ground-based gamma-ray telescopes. Detailed comparison of these data, including careful investigation of the shortest variability timescales involved, allows us to address one of the most important although still open questions
regarding relativistic jets, namely the location of the gamma-ray emission site in radio-loud AGNs. We also consider other aspects of this problem such as the energy budget of the outflow, the opacity for the most energetic gamma-rays generated in the vicinity of the M87 nucleus, and the structural changes observed at radio frequencies.
