The luminous Seyfert 1 galaxy Mkn 335 was observed by Exosat on six occasions between November 5, 1983 and December 24, 1985. A previous analysis of the December 6, 1984 observation revealed a two-component spectrum, with a hard power law dominant above about 2 keV on which was super-imposed a strong soft X-ray excess in the 0.1-2 keV band of the Exosat low-energy (LE) detectors. The hard X-ray component was seen to vary strongly over time-scales of 1-2 hr. in this 1984 observation. The more recent observations of Mkn 335, reported here, have shown the soft spectral excess to be a persistent feature, and the continuing presence of rapid variability in the hard X-ray component. An extended observation on July 21-22, 1985 has also revealed a strong variation in the LE band on a time-scale of about 10 hr. This is the first report of distinctive short-term variability in the soft X-ray excess of an AGN, strengthening its proposed identification with thermal emission from an accretion disk.
