Spectra of 25 Seyfert 1 galaxies have been obtained to search for variability on time scales shorter than ≡2 years. It is found that more than half of these galaxies have undergone spectral changes, and in most cases the change in the Hβ flux is proportional to the change in the optical continuum flux, from which it is inferred that the broad-line region is small, probably less than a few tens of light-days in radius as implied by other observations. It is argued that in cases where changes in the Hβ flux are not proportional to continuum changes, light travel time effects are responsible.
