Herbig Ae/Be (HAEBE) stars are objects which are believed to be intermediate mass stars (with masses between 2 and 10 times solar) in an evolutionary phase where they are still contracting before reaching the main sequence (MS). A significant fraction of HAEBEs are known to show irregular variations up to several magnitudes in the visual. The causes to which these variations are attributed are various, ranging from circumstellar to chromospheric activity and including internal pulsation. A closer monitoring with MONS of in particular the latter group is of interest to test models of pre-main-sequence (PMS) evolution. Other PMS stars that are not (candidate) δ Sct variables may still be of interest for observations with MONS to shed more light on the other possible causes of variability and their relation to the age of the objects. Modulation of the light due to rotation of magnetically active stars is of interest because of the still open problem of the evolution of angular momentum of PMS stars contracting onto the MS.
