The polar orbiting platform ENVISAT carries four instruments, GOMOS, MERIS, MIPAS, and SCIAMACHY which observe the Earth atmosphere. Among the data products from these instruments will be vertical profiles of the atmospheric temperature, pressure, density, and the aerosol load as well as non-profile data like cloud or aerosol optical thickness, cloud top pressure, and an aerosol absorption indicator. We will use our backscatter lidar on the Esrange (68N, 21E) near Kiruna, Sweden, to validate these ENVISAT data products. As an active remote sensing instrument a lidar utilizes measurement techniques fully independent of the passive remote sensing performed by ENVISAT instruments. Our lidar provides altitude registration of thin clouds, altitude profiles of the backscatter ratio and the depolarization factor, transmission of cloud layers, integrated transmission from the ground to 30 km altitude, and altitude profiles of temperature above the aerosol layer and altitude profiles of relative molecular density as well as relative pressure. These quantities can be converted to ENVISAT data products. We will perform several field measurement campaigns of 4 to 6 weeks duration primarily during summer and winter, when the temperature profile in the polar middle atmosphere attains extreme states. Campaign periods will be coordinated with other validation measurements.
