V2051 Oph is characterized on the basis of white-light observations obtained with a high-speed photometer on the 0.5-, 0.75-, 1.0-, or 1.9-m reflectors at the SAAO Sutherland station during 1984-1985. The data are presented in light curves, tables, Fourier amplitude spectra, and MEM deconvolution images and discussed in terms of a theoretical model. Features reported include brightness modulations with an irregular period about three times the orbital period and quasi-periodic (42-s) oscillations during outburst; no evidence is found for an established accretion disk. Light-curve variability is attributed to intermittent accretion onto a synchronously rotating, possibly polar white-dwarf primary, with corotation due to a 1-MG magnetic field and accretion-column cooling due to cyclotron emission. Observational evidence arguing against the polar model is also considered.
