Photometric and spectroscopic observations of UY Phe obtained in November 1985 with the South African Astronomical Observatory 1-m reflector at the Sutherland observing site show it to be a type RR Lyrae variable, rather than a dwarf nova as previously classified. A pulsation period of 0.5118 + or - 0.0004 days is indicated, and the UY Phe rise time of about 0.05 day is consistent with this period. UY Phe is shown to lie about 8 kpc above the Galactic plane, and an explanation for Meinunger's (1973) 21-day recurrence period is suggested.
