uvbyβ photometry is presented for a total of 61 stars in the young open cluster NGC 3293 in Carina. The luminosity-colour range of these stars extends to the B8 or B9 dwarf members and clearly delineates the zero age main sequence (ZAMS).
Distance estimates using the new data are made from both Crawford's and Eggen's luminosity calibration of the β index and by fitting the observed V0/C0 ZAMS to Crawford's mean MV/C0 ZAMS. It is found that the Crawford β/MV calibration when applied to the bright stars (BO - B2) indicates a distance modulus about 0.6 mag larger than that derived from the other methods, including ZAMS fitting of recently published UBV data for this cluster. The adopted modulus of the cluster is taken as 11.95 ± 0.1.
Comparison of the properties of the nine β Cep variable members of NGC 3293 with those of field β Cep variables clearly indicates that the commonly published absolute magnitudes of all the known variables are too bright by ˜0.6 mag. This is close to the correction required to match the theoretical pulsation constant, Q, for fundamental radial pulsation rather than for the first overtone mode which has hitherto been deduced.
