Hst Proposal Id #6585 Stellar Populations

Scientific paper

An understanding of present-day stellar populations is prerequisite for understanding stellar populations and galaxy evolution at intermediate- and high-redshift. While observations of galaxies and proto-galaxies at high redshift are certainly exciting, to interpret these high-z stellar populations requires present-day stellar population templates. Theoretical models are still lacking at the 30-40% level in matching the stellar populations of present-day galaxies. What is required are accurate spectral energy distributions of a range of real stellar populations, against which both models and high-z data can be compared. Here we propose to obtain high S/N {>20} mid-ultraviolet {2200-3400 Angstrom} spectra of relatively old {>2 Gyr old}, nearby stellar populations to fill in crucial gaps in our knowledge. In doing so, we are observing in the one spectral region where FOS is more sensitive than STIS, and where good S/N requires long exposures even with FOS.
