Scientific paper
The unique UV sensitivity of the FOC and its unprecedented spatial resolution make it a powerful tool to investigate the cornucopia of exotic objects populating the cores of globular clusters, such as Blue Stragglers, Cataclysmic Variables, post-AGB stars, AGB-manque' stars and variable blue stars. In addition, with the observations we propose, it will be possible for the first time to detect the upper part of the white dwarfs cooling sequence for temperatures down to 60,000 K. This will provide, by comparison with theoretical evolutionary models, fundamental information on currently dying stars in globular clusters (i.e. low mass stars), such as their present mass and the effects of mass-loss on their post-AGB evolution. The clusters we selected may have already undergone core collapse and this will allow us to study how this dramatic event can modify the stellar population in globular clusters cores and affect its subsequent evolutionary phases.
