Ultraviolet (IUE) and optical spectroscopic observations of W Serpentis objects (W Ser, W Cru, AR Pav, RX Cas, SX Cas) were analyzed. Results indicate the presence of circumstellar plasma with high degree of ionization. These objects are believed to be near contact or even contact systems, presently in an evolutionary stage, where a common envelope is formed.
