The technique of making altimeter to transponder measurements of orbit altitude through deployment of transponders beneath satellites is presented. Preliminary experiments for the assessment of this technique are discussed and early progress is reported. Altimeter to transponder measurements with the ERS-1 altimeter are discussed, and results are presented and analyzed. Results indicate that accurate measurements may be obtained by using this technique. Potential applications of the technique are discussed.
