Multidimensional correlation analysis based on Bayes decision rules and nonparametric estimation of multidimensional probability densities is applied to the classification of Cerenkov images recorded by a system of Cerenkov gamma telescopes with multichannel light detectors. Events associated with cosmic gamma quanta from local sources and cosmic rays are classified on the basis of differences in the Cerenkov image dimensions and image location and orientation in the focal plane of the gamma telescope mirror. The approach proposed here makes it possible to discriminate the cosmic ray background to fractions of a percent while retaining up to 50 percent of the events of interest.
