Properties of cubic interpolating and smoothing splines are examined. The possibility of using such splines for approximating an optical surface in the Hartman method is demonstrated. Numerical results of a computer calculation for a model mirror are presented which were obtained with the application of a smoothing procedure. Advantages of employing cubic splines for the approximation of optical surfaces are summarized.
