An operational Numerical Weather Prediction model producing forecasts beyond day 3 has to be global. A good global satellite observing system is then crucial for forecasting, as no other observing system is able to provide a full 3D data coverage. Some practical aspects of an operational model used for global medium range forecasting are discussed (e.g. data volume, cut-off time).
A simple example of use of TOVS retrieved profiles in an optimum interpolation analysis is presented, in order to highlight the advantages and the limitations of such a technique. Prospects and potential improvements of a variational analysis scheme are also discussed.
