A computer strategy for determining whether a satellite is over land or water, and which does not require a large memory storage, is described. In this system, the map of shorelines is entered into the permanent memory as an ordered array of points whose coordinates are not entered into the permanent memory but are stored in the memory cell addresses themselves. A satellite relying on autonomous navigation requires accurate altitude determinations which are easier to obtain if the satellite is over water, since corrections taking variations of the land relief into account must be made to altimeter readings obtained over land.
