Ionospheric measurements made during 1975-1976 at the IROE station in Tuscany are presented. Total electron measurements and solar flare detection were carried out with the ATS-6 radio beacon by means of a new kind of Doppler differential method. A frequency record is presented, which shows the frequency varying by some tenths of hertz during periods greater than one hour, thus demonstrating that it is possible to detect sudden TEC variations. A frequency shift of about 1.2 Hz is observed, corresponding to a TEC rate of change of about 3.5 x 10 to the 14th per sq m per sec.
