The possible use of a global effective sunspot number IG(12) for long-term ionospheric predictions is investigated based on data from vertical incidence sounding stations in China. It is shown that the relationship between the ionospherically derived index IG(12) and the ionospheric characteristic f0F2 or F2(3000)MUF is better than that between sunspot number R(12) and the ionospheric characteristic. The efficacy of using the IG(12) to predict f0F2, M(3000)F2, and F2(4000)MUF is evaluated. The evidence shows that using IG(12) instead of R(12) in the CCIR prediction scheme yields more accurate values of f0F2 and F2(4000)MUF in predictions made 12 months in advance. The average improvements in accuracy are about 18 percent and 10 percent respectively.
