Upper limits on the energy density of infrared photons in the radio lobe regions of M 87 are derived using measurements of the X-ray and gamma-ray emission. The calculations are based on an inverse Compton scattering model initiated by radio-flux producing electrons. It is shown that the energy density of infrared photons in the radio lobe regions is smaller than 2 eV cm-3.
