Concentrations of O(1D) and N(2D) and the glow characteristics of the upper atmosphere at 630 nm during periods of low and high solar activity were investigated on the basis of rocket measurements. In the F1 and F2 regions the greatest contribution to the formation of O(1D) is made by the photoelectron excitation of atomic oxygen; however, as the solar activity increases, the contribution of this process decreases. A semiempirical formula for calculating the O(1D) production rate due to photoelectrons is presented.
