We have obtained deep far- (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) images of the core of the dense globular cluster M15 with the Hubble Space Telescope. The UV colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) shows well defined tracks of horizontal branch stars, main sequence stars and white dwarfs. Our CMD is deep enough to reach 2 magnitudes below the main sequence turn-off. We have used our observations to identify the counterpart of the recently discovered low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) M15 X-2, and show that it is an ultracompact binary with an orbital period of only 22.6 minutes. We also find 43 additional FUV sources that exhibit significant variability, including the well known LMXB AC 211. Based on an analysis of the UV colours and variability properties, we classify the remaining variables as likely cataclysmic variables, RR Lyraes and oscillating blue stragglers (SX Phe stars). This represents the first detection of SX Phe pulsations in the FUV. We find that both SX Phes and RR Lyraes exhibit massive variability amplitudes in this waveband (several mags).
