When measuring visible optical emission in recent sound velocity and temperature measurements of shocked liquid D_2, we found an expected and as yet unexplained dramatic increase in the opacity of the shocked liquid below 13 GPa ( and roughly 2500 K) on the Hugoniot. In this ``low'' pressure region, the apparent optical emissivity is quite low, about that of chromium. The sound velocity, on the other hand, seems anomalously high. I will describe the measurements and results, and additional unusual results of optical studies. These data may have an impact on the opacity of giant planet interiors, and more globally to the need for additional understanding of the properties of fluid D2 at modest pressures and temperaures when the system is seemingly molecular.
