Optical observations of soft X-ray transients in quiescence are considered in the study of low mass X-ray binaries. Recent observations of two systems, 4U 2129+47 and 4U 1543-47, are discussed. In both cases the optical objects do not correspond to the expectations. The question of whether the objects are interlopers in the line of sight or physically associated with the X-ray source is analyzed.
