If an astrometric experiment consisting of measuring the positions of a given sample of stars with accuracy (sigma) during time (tau) results in the creation of a catalog which is used within time T greater than tau, then the unresolved binary stars are divided into four groups according to increasing orbital period. Formulas are derived for estimating the periods of these categories of binaries as a function of the experiment parameters (sigma, tau, and T), as well as of the absolute and visible parameters of the observed stars. The percentage of binaries in each group is estimated, and the possibility of their preliminary identification according to spectral and interferometric observations is evaluated.
