Using improved calculations for the possible spectra of obscured AGN and their host galaxies, we critically examine current models for the X-ray background. Given the latest Chandra and XMM X-ray survey results, we then explore the major uncertainties left in our understanding of this background, in particular in the fraction of highly obscured AGN and in the contributions from alternate source populations such as X-ray emitting blazars. We discuss how an imaging hard X-ray mission such EXIST mission will remove these ambiguities.
