The hypothesis is tested that the Universe underwent hydrodynamic fragmentation at an early stage after the Big Bang. Two emipirical functions used to describe such fragmentation on the laboratory scale are compared with the present distribution of total galactic luminosities (with M/L = constant). The comparison supports the hypothesis.
