A system capable of driving a variety of CCD (charge-coupled device) imagers in scientific applications is described. Although the system was designed and built for astronomical purposes, direct application to other fields is possible. A detailed description of the main parts and the selected design rules is given. To permit an easy duplication or update of the system particular care was taken to use, where possible, standard parts.
