The lunar mapping program carried out by the United States Defense Mapping Agency is reviewed, emphasizing its role as both a basis for and a result of Project Apollo. Telescopic photography of the moon was given impetus by the announcement of the Apollo project, and the results of the Ranger and Lunar Orbiter missions supplied nearly complete photographic coverage of the moon, including views of potential landing areas. The camera systems of Apollo 15 through 17 produced high quality positional data and maps. Maps produced in support of the Apollo project include the first lunar atlas and its rectified and orthographic versions, photomosaics, lunar astronautical charts, charts from the Ranger, Lunar Orbiter and Surveyor missions and maps acquired by the lunar orbital and landing Apollo missions. Cartographic technology involved in the acquisition and reduction of lunar photomaps and in laser and radar mapping is discussed.
