An outline is given of the astrophysical objectives and of the instrumentation employed in programs of balloon ultraviolet astronomy which are being carried out by the Queen's University of Belfast and University College, London. These studies are being made using star pointing stabilized balloon-borne platforms. The balloon observations are directed towards high spectral resolution studies of various types of stars to provide information on the interstellar gas and stellar atmospheres. The data obtained are complementary to the lower resolution studies being made by both group using the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite.
