A new characteristic for evaluating the global state of the ionosphere is proposed which is based on the concept of unitary variation, i.e. diurnal change in universal time of the mean longitudinal value of a geophysical parameter at a given latitude. Based on the proposed scheme, an analysis is made of vertical ionosphere sounding data obtained under the SUNDIAL program.
