The powerful plane wave decomposition method (PWDM) for finding the
eigenstates of the Helmoltz can be regarded as a variant of the
mathematically well-established boundary integral method (BIM). The
capability of the BIM and the PWDM are discussed using a unified
framework. This opens the way to further improvements.
