Various types of earth-centered orbits are described including the low earth orbit, polar orbit, highly eccentric orbit, geostationary orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, and Molniya orbit. The characteristics of these orbits and the means needed to attain and maintain them are reviewed. Particular attention is given to descriptions of the GEO and Molniya orbits, noting that these orbits have proved the most useful for communication satellite activities. Diagrams of these orbits are given and the major launch sites of the U.S. and the Soviet Union and their role in achieving various orbits is discussed.
