We present photometric and spectroscopic data for the largest sample of underluminous type IIP supernovae ever studied. We compare their light curves and spectra with those of normal SNe IIP in order to delineate the characteristics of this family of core-collapse events. While the observed properties suggest a rather homogeneous supernova group (low peak luminosities, red colours, narrow spectral lines that are indicative of slow-moving ejecta, small ejected 56Ni mass), the nature of the progenitor stars is still debated. We suggest that red supergiant progenitor spanning a rather wide range of masses can actually produce underluminous core-collapse SNe.
