In 2001 the University of Louisville opened a new planetarium replacing its conventional star projector with a theater for creating an immersive visual experience. While intended primarily for public outreach and primary school programming, the facility was designed to accommodate our introductory astronomy classes. With two years of experience in this venue, the promises and pitfalls of instruction aided by state-of-the-art visualization technology will be discussed. We added to the facility a Linux-based computer system using the Xinerama protocol to allow interactive display on a 200x60 degree panorama. The technology is very effective in the dome, and is also practical with multiple monitors on a desktop for individual student use. Some of the tools and other resources which are helpful in this environment will be described.Sometimes the content developed for class seems more current than that available in commercially produced public programming. Our efforts at creating outreach programming for a multimedia planetarium will be discussed.
