OBSERVATIONS of the relative umbra intensity as function of the position of sunspots on the solar disk can provide information concerning the temperature distribution within the sunspots. Unfortunately, earlier workers in this field usually combined observations of different spots at several positions on the solar disk. As the umbra intensity can change considerably from one spot to another it is possible that serious errors may have been introduced. Therefore observations of the same spot on several days during its passage across the solar disk are likely to give data which are more reliable.
