Two investigations using ultraviolet instrumentation, primarily concerned with interstellar matter are studied. High resolution spectroscopy at Lyman apha is used to determine the distribution of hydrogen and deuterium in the immediate solar neighborhood. Ultraviolet stellar photometry is used to supplement previous wide field of view observations, to obtain information on diffuse galactic light and the cosmic ultraviolet background. The Copernicus was used to obtain detections of Ly alpha emission from two stars within 5 pc of the Sun, 70 Oph A and Altair, and to obtain limits of n H 0.45/cubic cm and n H 0.11/cubic cm along the respective line of sights. The Altair spectrum complements a spectrum obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and provides evidence for a chromosphere in an A-type star.
