The observations of the ultraviolet (u.v.) spectra of the major planets are examined and an interpretation of the results is presented. It is shown that for a full interpretation of the observed u.v. spectra, supporting data from laboratory and theoretical work is required. Consideration is given to observations with the International Ultraviolet Explorer, to Lyman-alpha observation, and to fly-by missions. Some unresolved problems, including the need for further laboratory studies and simultaneous solar data, are discussed.
