We present a photometric analysis of the interacting binary star R Ara using archival IUE data. We find significant photometric variations on time scales as short as one orbital period (4.4 days), and outside-of-eclipse flux changes of up to 80% within a decade. We also explain quite peculiar wavelength dependencies of the light curve features, attributed to a variable accretion structure. These photometric variations are consistent with a variable system undergoing rapid mass transfer, presumably in the short-lived pre-Algol stage of its evolution.
