Over the past few years, the writer and co-workers have carried out a program of ground-based photometric monitoring of central stars of planetary nebulae. To date, this survey has resulted in the discoveries of four extremely close binaries and a short-period pulsating central star. This proposal requests IUE time to continue a program of ultraviolet observations of these interesting new objects. The newly discovered close-binary nuclei have orbital periods of 2.7 to 16 hours. We propose to obtain low-dispersion IUE spectra of these objects in order to provide information on the temperatures, distances, and other parameters of these important binary systems. We have found the very hot central star of Kohoutek 1-16 to be a pulsating variable with a period of 28 minutes. Along with the pulsating hot white dwarf PG 1159-035 and two further pulsating PG white dwarfs that we have recently discovered, these objects define a new instability strip at the left-hand edge of the HR diagram. We propose to obtain ultraviolet spectra of the central star of K 1-16, along with simultaneous ground-based photometry, in order to provide information on its pulsational characteristics.
