The stars to be investigated belong to a sample of relatively cool DA white dwarfs with Teff below about 12000 K. Earlier IUE studies have shown that most if not all of these objects have an unidentified absorption near 1395 and more recent IUE observations have revealed the exciting result that these spectral features turn to tremendously strong depressions at temperatures below or about 10,000 K and that additional ones appear. At present, there is no generally accepted explanation for these absorptions, a short review of the possibilities being given in the text. It is proposed that a limited number of the coolest DA's be studied in order to: (1) Search for additional ultraviolet features that do not appear at the higher temperatures hitherto examined, (2) Obtain further information on the temperature dependence of the known features, and (3) compare the observed spectral energy distributions, determined from combining ultraviolet and visual data, with those from model atmospheres. More generally, these observations could yield new information on the nature of the DA white dwarfs. Until quite recently, it was commonly believed that
