The soluble organic matter in sediments can be removed rapidly by using ultrasonics. This high-frequency sound subjects finely ground sediments to vigorous scrubbing by organic solvents; it is so effective that ten minutes of such treatment replace six hours of conventional treatment with hot solvents. In addition, analyses employing this new extraction method are characterized by greater precision and higher yields of soluble organic matter.
